About Us
Posted by BiBer
The idea of forming the Brunei Birmingham Students Society started out with a need for unity. Back in 2007, the Bruneian community in Birmingham comprised of less than 20 people. We came up with the idea to form a society for Bruneian students studying in Birmingham, to represent Bruneians in Birmingham and bring us together as a community. The name Bruneians in Birmingham was created, together with its acronym BiB, and BiBers – a shortened name for BiB members.
In 2008, the society’s first official committee was elected, and the name Brunei Birmingham Students Society was created to add professional value to the society. BiB and BiBers are still being used as the unofficial and ‘affectionate’ name for the society and its members. We are looking forward to affiliate with the Brunei Students’ Unit as our request is still being reviewed.
The aims of the Brunei Birmingham Students Society are:
- To strengthen social ties between Bruneian students around the UK or wherever they may be.
- To establish ourselves as one of the active student societies in the UK.
- To act as representatives of Bruneian students studying in Birmingham specifically, and in the UK in general.
Over the past year since the society was formed, we have organised several events of which are now held annually. In February 2009, we hosted our first national event, the MadPaintball tournament, where 14 teams from all over the UK took part. In the future we aim to organise bigger events which also involve students all over the UK.
