Here are some thoughts from graduates of Birmingham universities:
Birmingham and Aston University has provided me with an invaluable perspective as Birmingham is a multicultural city with people from different backgrounds. There are plenty choices for food and cater for Halal as well as Chinese, Japanese, Italian restaurants and also not forgetting the traditional fish and chip stops on various corners of the street.
Aston University is based in the heart of the city, and with a mix of local and international students, the different backgrounds made the learning experience more interesting as we share our insights in classroom discussions. Aston University also provides a 1-year placement with various well-known employers in the UK, which helps students to develop their personal as well as practice their professional skills to the real world environment. The atmosphere in Aston is quite a close-knit community, with the student union consistently organizing events that provide for the multicultural society in the university.
It has been a great 3 years experience to do my undergraduate studies from Aston University and I have learnt quite a lot during my stay in Birmingham.

My time as an undergraduate in Birmingham was an emotional journey to say the least. I didn’t really like what I was doing as it was very much a practical course which involved a lot of learning how to use computer softwares (that was a nightmare!). However, I had some really helpful and dedicated tutors and lecturers who guided me throughout my three-year course. Where I lacked in practical proficiency, I aced in essay courseworks. That really helped me pull my borderline grades up for my final year! My tutor was kind enough to spare her time discussing my dissertation with me and ensure that I was on the right track. So they have really great people there who I owe my success to!
I never made use of the student unions, but the library was excellent! I had all the books and resources I needed from there. My study experience there helped me to further my studies, gaining a place at Cardiff University to do a postgraduate degree in Political Communication.
Birmingham has everything from easily-accessed Halal food, a close-knit Bruneian “society” (cos we didnt have a society yet back then), easy transportation, cheaper accommodation compared to my other friends who studied elsewhere in the UK, and a strategic place to be as well (close to London and only a few hours away from other major cities in the UK). Birmingham is a fusion of a busy city and a quiet neighbourhood so you can enjoy the luxury of both. And let’s not forgot the seemingly endless shopping sprees!
I would recommend Birmingham as a place of study because it it has a mix of different cultures, the atmosphere is very vibrant and lively! You can find so many students from different backgrounds, so any international student studying there won’t feel foreign at all. The people there are very friendly and helpful too!
